Tapping for Joy

Recently, James, one of Unisson’s supported independent living clients on the Central Coast, shared with his support worker Sam, that he would like to purchase a tap dancing floor. Sam and James searched the internet, however, they were unable to find anything suitable: there was nothing that James either liked or could afford.

Being handy with power tools and possessing some carpentry skills, Sam asked James if he would like to make his own tap dancing floor. James loved the idea.

Sam and James went to the local hardware to purchase the items they needed, with James choosing the flooring he liked the best. A workshop was set up in the garage, and Sam and James got to work. James really enjoyed the process and gave Sam lots of advice on how he wanted to proceed.

When the new tap dancing floor was finally completed, James gave his housemates and Unisson support workers a wonderful performance with his new tap shoes, demonstrating his best dancing skills. James particularly enjoys dancing to ‘Cups’ by Anna Kendrick, and trying to mimic the beat.

This is a great example of how our support workers look for innovative ways to help our clients achieve their goals, while empowering them to make their own choices every day.
