Top Tips to Style Your New Supported Independent Living Bedroom

Whether you’re changing your current living arrangement or moving out of home for the first time – moving into a new Supported Independent Living (SIL) home can be daunting!

It’s important to feel a sense of belonging in your new home – when we feel a sense of belonging, we are more comfortable to open up and be ourselves. One of the best ways to feel at home, is to make the space your own! Whether it’s decorating, painting, adding scents and sounds to your bedroom, we can’t wait to see you get creative!

To help you make this transition, here’s our top four tips on how to style your bedroom to make you feel at home:

1. Overall Look and Layout

Before moving into your new SIL home, have a conversation with your SIL provider to work out what furniture you can bring from home, or whether new furniture will need to be purchased. Once you have a clear idea of what furniture you will have, start thinking about the overall look, feel and layout you want to achieve in your bedroom. Are you after a more cosy and relaxing space, or a more modern and vibrant one? Don’t forget, how you arrange your furniture plays a big role in making the most out of your space.

2. Personal Touches

It’s important to add personal touches to your bedroom that reflect your personality and interests to really make you feel at home  – prior to moving, gather some personal items with meaning. This could be your favourite artwork, photographs of you and your loved ones or even décor that reflects your personality.

3. Colour Scheme

Choose a colour scheme that reflects your personal style – this could be a vibrant colour palette, or you could opt for a more neutral palette. Your colour scheme will be impacted by the colours of your furniture, personal items, artwork, and bedding. So best to plan ahead of time to ensure all these items suit the overall theme you are picturing. Remember, this is your personal space so you can decorate it how you please!

4. Comfortable Sleeping Environment

Have you ever stayed at a friend’s house or even a hotel where the bedding was just so uncomfortable that you couldn’t sleep? We sure have! Which is why it’s important when changing your living environment, to ensure you have invested in comfortable bedding such as your mattress, linen, and pillows. If you already have a comfy mattress and a favourite pillow, bring it with you – these things are vital in creating a welcoming and comfortable sleeping environment.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match different styles and elements to create a unique and personalised space that reflects you as a person. Remember, styling your room takes time – if you don’t get it the first time, keep playing around with things until it’s just right! Your support staff are also a great asset for help or advice.
