Making the Most of Your NDIS Plan

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Understanding how the NDIS works can be confusing. People wonder who can use it, what it can pay for, and how to get funding. Let’s talk about some important things so you can do to make the most of your NDIS plan.

  1. Check If You Can Join the NDIS:
To be able to get a NDIS plan you need to:
      – Be between 7 and 65 years old
      – Live in Australia as a resident.
      – Have a disability that is permanent, or r need support now to prevent issues later.
If you’re not sure if you’re eligible, call the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA)
on 1800 800 110. They are the ones you talk to first when you want to join the NDIS.
  2. Understand Your NDIS Plan:
Take time to understand what’s in your plan. Know your goals, how much funding you have for different types of support, and the rules for using that funding. Knowing these details will help you use your plan well and ask for what you need.
  3. Set Clear Goals:
Your plan is based on what you want to achieve. Make sure your goals are clear and easy to measure. Goals might be about getting better at everyday things, finding a job, making friends, or staying healthy. Talk about your goals with the person helping you with your plan so they can include them in your NDIS plan.

It is good to think about short term goals and long term. Some long-term include moving out of your family home into Supported Independent Living or finding and keeping a job.
Each type of goal will require different funding.
  4. Use Support Coordination:
Support coordinators can help you understand your plan, find good and reliable services for you, and help to problem solve with you. They also help you get ready for NDIS plan reviews and make changes if needed.
  5. Choose Good Service Providers:
Pick service providers who have experience with what you need and who you feel comfortable with. Make sure you browse their website and read google reviews from other customers. Remember, you have the right to get good support that helps you. If you are not happy with your support, you can always find a new service provider.
  6. Use Your NDIS Funding Wisely:
Be careful how you spend your NDIS budget so that you don’t run out of funding too quickly. It is important to think about your NDIS goals and if you are using your funding to support your goals. It is also important that your service provider gives you updates on your funding remaining as your services are delivered.

You can also contact a plan manager if you have chosen Plan Management for your NDIS funding and they will support you to manage your funds.
  7. Get Ready for Plan Reviews:
These reviews help see how well you’re doing and if anything needs to change. Keep a record of what you’ve achieved and any problems you’ve faced to talk about during the review. It is important that you have evidence of the support you need to ensure you are funded correctly in your next NDIS plan. Evidence can include things like progress reports, care plans, schedule of support. Your service provider and your Support Coordinator should help you with this.
  8. Stay Informed and Connected:
Keep learning about the NDIS and connect with local groups or workshops. There are many community networks on Facebook and LinkedIn that you can join and find useful information.
  9. Speak Up for What You Need:
Don’t be afraid to say what you need or ask for help if your plan isn’t working well. Your NDIS plan is there to support you in the best way possible.
