Disability Employment Services Sydney: What is Supported Employment?

Supported employment is a service designed to help people with disabilities find and keep meaningful, paid jobs. Under the NDIS, these services are tailored to each person’s needs, offering support with job skills, workplace adjustments, and ongoing assistance. The goal is to help participants develop their skills, gain independence, and build a lasting career.

Support can include:

  • Help with job applications and interviews
  • On-the-job training and mentoring
  • Support with workplace communication and social skills

How Supported Employment is Different

Supported employment stands out from open employment or standard job programs because it provides structured, ongoing support in an inclusive workplace. While open employment expects individuals to work independently, supported employment ensures that participants receive:

  • Customised help to match their abilities and goals
  • A safe, understanding environment where they feel valued
  • Long-term support for personal and professional growth

Supported employment is about creating opportunities that respect individual differences, helping participants thrive in a job they enjoy.

Benefits of Supported Employment for Individuals with Disabilities

Personal Growth

Supported employment helps participants build confidence and self-esteem by achieving personal goals and learning new things. As they gain work experience, they become more job-ready, making it easier to take on future roles or responsibilities.

Skill Development

Participants develop both:

  • Technical skills: Learning specific tasks such as packaging, gardening, administration, or retail work.
  • Soft skills: Improving teamwork, communication, time management, and problem-solving—essential skills for any workplace.

These skills not only help participants succeed at work but also benefit their daily lives.

Social Inclusion

Supported employment fosters a sense of belonging by creating opportunities to connect with others in an inclusive environment. Participants make friends, build relationships, and become more involved in their community.

Fulfillment

Earning an income and managing workplace responsibilities helps participants be more fulfilled. They can make their own financial decisions, contribute to household expenses, and take pride in being part of the workforce.

Supported employment isn’t just about work—it’s about creating a pathway to a happier and fulfilling life. Would you like support in finding the right job for you? Unisson Disability can guide you every step of the way! Contact Us today.

What is Supported Employment?

Supported Employment provides meaningful work opportunities for individuals with disabilities, helping them develop skills, gain fulfilment, and be part of a supportive community. It is designed to offer tailored support, ensuring employees can succeed in inclusive workplaces.

NDIS Supported Employment refers to employment services funded through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) that help individuals with disabilities find and maintain meaningful work. These services focus on skill development, workplace support, and long-term job fulfilment.

While all NDIS Supported Employment is a form of Supported Employment, not all Supported Employment is funded by the NDIS. Some people may access it through other funding sources or private arrangements.

Unisson Disability offers a range of Supported Employment jobs through:
Pack Works – A packaging service focused on teamwork and skill-building.
Ground Works – A grounds maintenance business providing hands-on experience.

Individuals with an NDIS plan that includes funding for ‘Finding and Keeping a Job’ are eligible for Supported Employment services. Typically, they need NDIS funding and an employment-related goal in their plan to allocate funding specifically for disability employment support.

Employees in NDIS Supported Employment services receive tailored support, including on-the-job training, skill development, and workplace adjustments to help them feel confident and supported in their roles.

Absolutely! Supported Employment for people with disabilities provides pathways for professional growth and greater fulfilment. Many individuals start with entry-level roles and progress to more advanced positions with ongoing training and support.
