Life can change in an instant. For Jim, a sudden accident and stroke turned his world upside down. Overnight, the life he once knew slipped away, and he found himself in a nursing home, surrounded by people far older, in an environment where he struggled to belong. Jim’s accident left him with an acquired brain injury, meaning he now needs support with the everyday tasks he once managed on his own.
In 2012, Jim joined Unisson through the YPIRAC project, a national initiative helping young people move out of aged care and into homes that truly fit their needs. When he arrived, things were tough. Jim relied completely on his electric chair for mobility, needed two people to help him transfer, and could only manage one or two words at a time. Remembering names was difficult. The doctors’ advice was confronting: Jim would never speak or walk again.
But Jim had other plans.
From the very beginning, Jim’s focus was unshakable, he wanted his life back. While others might have chosen comfort or distraction, Jim poured every ounce of energy into rehabilitation. With the steady encouragement of his Unisson team, he spent countless hours at the recreation centre. At first, he could only float in the pool, his body weak and unsteady. But slowly, step by step, he began to move through the water. Each small victory built his strength, until, little by little, Jim found himself walking on land once again.
He also set his sights on his speech. With the help of therapists and Unisson staff, Jim used flashcards and daily practice to form sounds, then words, then conversations. Staff gave themselves one-word nicknames so he could connect more easily, and they never missed a chance to chat with him. Every word was a victory, and Jim kept going.
Over the years, his determination paid off. Today, at 59, Jim begins each morning with a walk by the waterfront, using a supportive boot and crutch for balance. He enjoys a coffee and a chat with locals, his speech now strong enough to share his thoughts, his humour, and his opinions.

At home, life is busy and full. Jim barbecues his dinner every night, makes salads with support, and spends weekends catching up with friends and family. His team has watched him grow from a man frustrated by silence to someone who speaks freely, confidently sharing his needs and his world.
Jim’s journey is not over. But what he has already achieved is proof of what is possible with determination, encouragement, and the right support.
Step by step, word by word, Jim has created a life that is truly his own.
