If you’ve ever walked through Pack Works, Unisson Works’ buzzing supported employment hub, chances are you’ve met Jonathan. Maybe you caught him mid-fold, laser-focused on a stack of boxes, or grinning from ear to ear as he tidies up his workstation. Either way, you’d know instantly … this guy loves his job.
Pack Works is part of Unisson Disability’s supported employment division, where people gain hands-on experience, learn new skills, and work in a team that feels more like family. From packaging and labelling to assembly work for local businesses, it’s a place where everyone shines in their own way … and Jonathan? He’s been shining here since 2010! (Back when we were still called Sunshine.)
“I’m a packaging specialist,” Jonathan says proudly. “I like collecting things, sorting boxes, and folding. I don’t like to multitask; I like to focus on one thing at a time.” Honestly, we could all take a page from Jonathan’s book!
He currently works three days a week, the perfect balance, he says, between work life and home life. And while Pack Works has changed over the years, one thing hasn’t: Jonathan’s love for what he does and the people he does it with.
“It’s a nice place to work. My colleagues are helpful and nice, and the team too. Pack Works is a good place to prepare people with disability for open employment.”
When he’s not at Pack Works, Jonathan’s out soaking up life, whether it’s bushwalking, spending time with family, or outswimming his dad at the pool. “My dad swims slow, I swim very fast!” he laughs, and we don’t doubt it for a second.
Jonathan’s curiosity doesn’t stop at the workshop either. He’s completed computer and business courses and is particularly proud of his email skills.
“Email is the most important part of my education,” he explains. “I like sending emails to the CEO and keeping a professional relationship. It helps me communicate when I’m struggling with something.” And yes, Lee, our CEO, can confirm: his inbox is a happier place thanks to Jonathan!
Next on Jonathan’s wish list? Becoming a Client Representative at Unisson’s head office. “It’s about showing respect to people and learning new things,” he says, a goal that suits him perfectly.
When he’s off-duty, you’ll catch him watching Titanic: “It’s hard to watch, but I love it,” or enjoying a good Chinese or Indian curry. And if you ask about his signature look? He’ll flash a grin and tell you straight: “I have these amazing looks because I’m happy. I look like Errol Flynn!”
